Jenny Thom LPC
Jenny has a Master of Science in Counseling from Oregon State University and a Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences from University of Oregon. Earned sexual health certificates in Sex Therapy and Sex Education from the University of Michigan. Has experience working with individuals, couples, adolescents and adults in mental health and addiction settings, both residential and outpatient.
Jenny works with people of all gender identities and orientations seeking to deepen their connections with their own bodies and with others. Areas of special focus include supporting people in healing from trauma, relationship and intimacy coaching, gender exploration and affirmation and cultivating body acceptance. Jenny is committed to supporting healing for people who have historically been given less access to sexual empowerment and expression. Her practice centers around queer, non-binary, transgender folks and women.
Jenny's approach draws largely from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Attachment, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Jenny's philosophy is based on the belief that people do well when they can. Barriers such as stress, trauma and unhealthy coping strategies can be problematic in both individuals and relationships. Jenny aims to support growth in the direction one chooses, learning to solve problems and face crises- helping clients to move toward their identified goals, which are generally reduced to changes in behavior, emotional regulation, lifestyle, and perception of self.
Clients should be aware that counseling presents both benefits and risks, as they seek to make changes in their lives. The progress of counseling will be reviewed throughout the process, and modifications will be made as needed. The counseling room is a place of openness, with no judgement or bias.
Jenny grew up in Southeast Portland (Milwaukie High School Alumni). Is very enthusiastic about physical movement and wellness, exploring by EUC (electric unicycle), flying around with spouse in their 1968 single prop Beechcraft, all things plants, gardening and knitting socks!
