Emily Schomann LPC
Education
I hold a Masters of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Pacific University. As part of this degree, I completed courses in human development, cognitive behavior therapy, individual and group therapy methods, cultural competencies, ethics, diagnosis, and assessment. I earned a Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in psychology from Western Oregon University in 2007. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with the state of Oregon. To maintain my license I am required to participate in frequent continuing education, taking courses with subjects relevant to this profession. I also participate in professional supervision and consultation groups with other licensed therapists and counselors in order to support my work with clients. I have extensive experience and training treating youth and their families.
Services Offered
My practice focuses on servicing youth and families, however I also offer counseling services to adults. I typically conduct therapy in a family setting but have experience working therapeutically with individuals as well.
Theoretical Orientation
My philosophy of counseling is based on the belief that the client possesses the power to change, and that it is my role to help the client become aware of how to understand and utilize that power. I operate from a systemic approach in which I consider all the interactions a client is having with their family and community and suggest alternatives that might lead to the changes a client desires. I accept whatever goals and frameworks the client and/or family bring to sessions, and attempt to work within their framework to help folks achieve what they desire. I work in English and attempt to be culturally relevant in my suggestions. Issues such as self-esteem, behavioral difficulties in school and/or home, divorce or separation, bereavement, drug and alcohol issues and difficulties in family communication are among the wide range of situations with which I typically work. I have specialized training in cognitive behavior therapy, strategic family therapy, parent-child interaction therapy, motivational interviewing, gender-affirming therapy for transgender people, and foster and adoptive therapy.
More Information
In my free time, I enjoy being with my family and friends. Born and raised in Oregon, I have learned to love the rain and like experiencing what the Northwest has to offer. I also enjoy cooking, gardening, and playing with my pup Dexter and my kitty Roxanne.
