Katy Schaefer LCSW, CADCI
Education
Providing support and resources to those looking to discover their best selves fills my spirit. It was through the University of Oregon and completion of a Bachelor of Science Degree that I participated on the Co-op Team. This team was composed of a multi-disciplinary group of professionals serving some of the most high-risk families in Lane County. From here I learned how to navigate resources and help others to become their own best advocate.
My journey led me to obtain a Master's of Social Work from the University of Southern California and become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Through graduate school and my role with the County of Orange in California, I became aware of the importance of supporting those with addiction issues and ultimately became a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADCI).
In my early years with Western Psychological I was a Chemical Dependency Counselor. I now work at Western as a Mental Health Therapist while continuing to utilize my knowledge in addiction issues to support clients as needed.
Services Offered
I work with young adults, adults and older adults doing Individual counseling.
Theoretical Orientation
We live in what I believe to be one of the most wonderful places. The Portland Metro area is full of opportunities, breathtaking sights and inspiring culture.
However, even here it is important to stay in tune with our needs so that we can be our most healthy, balanced selves and enjoy the opportunities around us. Feelings, emotions, stressors and life events can sidetrack our stability and therapy can help you find your way.
Often I am told by clients I have a way of addressing difficult topics or giving perspective in a way that is compassionate, strengths-based, tactful and respectful. My role in therapy is to provide a safe, non-judgmental setting that is full of encouragement, acknowledgement of strengths and insight into opportunities for growth.
I will provide you with clues and strategies along the way on how to listen to your feelings more openly and make decisions based on your priorities and goals; not mine.
I utilize a holistic view to determine, along with my client, the best strategy to reach the desired change. By continuing to be aware of how the biological, psychological, sociological and spiritual sense of self is impacted by life's journey, it is my goal to help provide clients with skills and support to live a happy and balanced life. I appreciate the courage it takes to dive into therapy or even tip-toe around the therapy waters. Welcome to Western Psychological and I look forward to meeting you!
More Information
I was born and enjoyed childhood in Georgia, grew up in Southern California and after completion of graduate school returned to Oregon to establish my roots. I enjoy camping, discovering my green thumb, new restaurants, date nights with my husband and watching the world through my son's eyes.
